Robin Hood

This week saw the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington DC. Outside, thousands of protesters, activists and supporters marched with a strong message: We Can End Aids.

At 5 different locations in downtown Washgton DC, supporters gathered and made their way towards Lafayette Park opposite the White House. Health GAP, Vocal-NY, ACT UP, National People’s Action and National Nurses United, along side various other supporters, took to the street in their hundreds to make sure their message was heard loud and clear.

Making their way to the White House, a sea of green hats marched for the Robin Hood Tax. En route, supporters posted declarations of support at the offices of the Securities Industries Financial Management Association, Bank of America’s D.C. offices and at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce national headquarters amongst others. NNU Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro and Health GAP Managing Director Jennifer Flynn addressed over 1000 Robin Hood Tax supporters at each symbolic stop.

“Wall Street took it away and Robin Hood wants it back,” said NNU Co-President Jean Ross. “That revenue can help AIDS prevention and treatment—here and abroad.  And help meet all community needs- jobs, education, retirement, the environment.”

HIV/AIDS cannot be eradicated without also addressing poverty, inequality, human rights, and sustainable development.  The Robin Hood Tax could play a vital role in seeing an end to the AIDS pandemic, helping those most in need and those most affected by the financial crisis.
