What does Britain look like?

13.5 million people, including 4 million children, are living in poverty in the UK – the fifth richest country in the world. Yet the media spotlight rarely falls on this issue. We have collected some stories from people across the country about what life is really like.

@Laura - Ignorance is bliss huh?

We left the UK 2 years ago having planned our exit strategy for about 2 years before.
I will always remember that “Road to Damascus moment”, my wife and I were walking down Bedminster high St in Bristol at the time.
Now anyone who knows Bedminster will tell you this is not a very wealthy part of Bristol.
The shopping precinct has a lot of charity shops and strangely enough also a lot of banks (I wonder if it still has as many banks).
I was just wandering along looking in the windows as you do when it suddenly struck me.
I said to my wife Stella “Have you noticed one thing that every bank along this road is saying with there advertising” she looked at me and said not really as she had not been taking much notice.
“Well I said, basically every one of these banks is saying to the people of this rather poor area, we don’t care how much money your making come in a borrow some more”
This was the moment we both looked at each other and said “Bloody hell this is not good, it’s time to get the F***** out of Dodge.
We then worked very hard on the investment property we were doing up, sold it, got rid of the cars, the mortgage the credit cards and applied for residency in New Zealand.
So the point I am making is the situation that everyone is finding themselves in was no accident, its been a long term systematic fraud by persons or persons unknown within the banking system.
I am sure that there are some names that can be brought to mind by individuals in government around the world, however the reality of the situation, I believe, is that this whole mess is proof that if you are rich and powerful enough the Democratic system and the rule of law that governs the Western world holds no sway over you.

Just for the record I am not an anti capitalist or a socialist, they are the two ends of the spectrum in my book.
I am just a hard working small businessman who has always believed in giving back to society where possible.
So the Robin Hood tax is a great idea, however I do have a suspicion that those in real power will never allow it to happen.
But whoever came up with the idea deserves a round of applause.

There is no such thing as poverty in the UK. Free housing, schooling and healthcare is provided with spending money too.

Do you get the feeling that the Robin Hood Tax could be a tipping point for social justice on a massive scale?

Justice for Carol and others could be achieved by forcing our political leaders to give a public answer to Robin's simple tax idea: Yes? No? If no, then exactly whom do you serve?

I feel sorry for these people. I also feel sorry that so many others believe that welfare and income redistribution are the solution to the problems these people experience.

These stories are no surprise to me unfortunately. I live in a deprived area - these stories are all around me.
Even if you aren't 'FRED', you're gonna suffer because of the dehumanising effects of having to struggle for basics and still try to retain some hope.
    It's obscene.
We need this tax - urgently!

This is a worldwide manmade phenomenon. People from all sorts of backgrounds, educated or not, suffering under the rules that an elitist, privileged minority creates. All so that they can gain, accumulate and preserve wealth that they'd never be able to spend in a lifetime. Distancing themselves further and further from the so called 'common people', getting rid of them in the process. Survival of the toughest, or rather the fiercest and greediest, immoral to the bone, it makes me sick...

People like Carol are the real heros. Struggling to get by herself but still going out of her way to help others. It's people like her that we should aspire to be like, not the false celebrity idols.
